ONA Consultant - Katheryn Fernandez, PhD, RN, CCDC III-E, ICRC

Term 2015-2017

The OhSNA welcomes Dr Kathy Fernandez as the newly appointed Ohio Nurses Association Consultant.  Dr. Fernandez is an associate professor at Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN), where she teaches gerontology and the dynamics of nursing and facilitates the first year experience in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. She also is the coordinator for academic support for MCCN, which fosters peer tutoring and faculty coaching to bolster students’ academic success. In this role, she redesigned MCCN’s student orientation to the new Smart Start program, a workshop geared at ensuring students are positioned to succeed as they launch their nursing education.

Prior to joining MCCN, Fernandez held teaching positions at Central Ohio Technical College and Columbus State Community College. In addition to serving as a curriculum development and training consultant at Ceridian Human Capital Management Company and as a regional manager at Employee Assistance Associates in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Fernandez has a clinical background that includes roles as a unit manager at Lutheran Village Care Center, a psychology intern at Columbus East Psychological Services, a staff therapist at Northwest Counseling Services and a staff nurse at Mount Carmel East. She is a member of the Ohio Nurses Association, the Ohio League of Nursing, the National League of Nursing – serving as ambassador to Mount Carmel College of Nursing for 2015-2018, the Rho Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (the honor society of nursing) and Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society.

Fernandez received her PhD and Master of Science from The Ohio State University and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Wright State University. In addition to being a registered nurse, she also is a certified chemical dependency counselor/supervisor.

Fernandez has published articles in several professional journals and presented at industry conferences. She has received numerous awards for her contributions, including receiving three Excellence in Nursing Awards from Mount Carmel, the 2013 National League for Nursing Hearst Foundation Award for Excellence in Geriatric Education and several teaching awards from Columbus State Community College and The Ohio State University (graduate teaching). Committed to community service, Fernandez has donated her time to several causes, including the Isabelle Ridgway Care Center, the Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome, the Out of the Dark Suicide Awareness Walk, the Wounded Warrior- Pedals for Potter 5K Run/Walk, the American Heart Association, United Methodist Church Camps and St. Charles Preparatory School.

Student Consultant, Megan Jones, RN

Hello everyone, my name is Megan Jones and I am honored to have been selected by this years Board of Directors to serve as one of the Student Consultants to the OhSNA. I have had the privilege of serving on the BOD for the past two years as Membership director and then as Vice President.

I am currently a Registered Nurse working at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and really am blessed for the opportunity to work in such a specialized unit as a new graduate nurse. I am also pursuing my RN-BSN degree through Ohio University online.
The Board of Directors for the OhSNA have a great foundation of leaders and students that will accomplish great things this year and I look forward to working with them and supporting them.
Good luck to all nursing students in Ohio this year with all academic and leadership endeavors and I look forward to seeing you all come together as a state of strong nursing leaders!

Student Consultant, Genevieve Blank, RN
Genevieve Blank graduated from Chamberlain College of Nursing in August of 2016. She passed her NCLEX on October 6, 2016, and recently accepted a job on the Trauma Intermediate Care Unit (TICU) at Grant Medical Center.
She will be a Student Consultant this year for the incoming OhSNA Board of Directors. While on the Board of Directors last year, Genevieve served as the Legislative Director. At Chamberlain, Genevieve was the President of her campus SNA chapter, served as a Student Ambassador, and was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, Phi Pi Chapter.
She grew up just north of Bucyrus, Ohio, which is a small town famous for its Bratwurst Festival. She has seven siblings and loves to visit them whenever she can. In any other free time, Genevieve enjoys taking her dog Niko to the park, spending time with her fiancé, Michael, making plans for her wedding next year, photography, painting, running, and any other outdoor activities.
She is looking forward to a great year ahead consulting for the new Board of Directors!
